Keywords and keyword phrases are the search terms that people type into the search bar on google or any other seach engine when they are trying to find information. Search engines use these words and or phrases to help compare your site in relation to the search term. For example if I were serching for new golf clubs I may type in the term golf shop or golf clubs. The search engines will look for the most popular site in relation to the search keyword or keyword phrase and list that as option number one in the search result.

The goal of every internet marketer is to dominate specific keywords or phrases so that they always turn up on page one of the search engines. The problem is, the more popular the keyword or phrase the greater the competition to outrank all other sites for that phrase. This being the case the idea is to search for associated keywords or phrases that are searched regularly by people. The trick to finding a good keyword to target people searching requires 4 simple steps.

How To Find A Good Keyword Step 1: Narrow Your Competition By Finding Specific Keywords that You Can Dominate
If we continue with the theme of golf here is an illustration. A recent google search for the keyword golf showed 340,000,000 listings for the keyword. If I make the search more specific the competition should drop. For example in a more specific search using the term golf clubs the result was 25,600,000. The more specific the search the less competition. When we narrowed the search again to the keyword phrase mens golf clubs the competition once again decreased with only 1,990,000 competitors for top search engine ranking. Finally the search term mens left handed golf clubs netted a return of 145,000 listings.

How To Find A Good Keyword Step 2: Check How Many People Search For The Term
Visit Google and use their free keyword tool to check how many times a month your keyword is searched. When I typed in our keyword phrase mens left handed golf clubs the results indicated that the phrase is searched for 540 times a month. While this is not a huge number with the right strategies you can achieve Google rank 1 for this search term. If you can get in the top three spots on google you are going to get al least 200 people visit your site every month, not bad for targeting one highly specific search phrase. Here is the bonus of the google keyword tool. When I typed in the search term mens left handed golf clubs it also gave me several other results for similar phrases. For example, left handed golf club set which is searced 1900 times a month and left handed ladies golf clubs with 1600 searches every month.

So the summary so far. We have found some niche or highly specific keywords to target with our website content and we have conducted some keywork research to make sure enough people search for the terms to make our marketing efforts worthwhile.

How To Find A Good Keyword Step 3:Assesss The Real Competition For The Keyword
using our example, we now have three potential keywords to target, mens left handed golf clubs, ladies left handed golf clubs and left handed golf club set. Now we are going to check the real competition for our keywords. You do this by completing an all in title search and an all in url search. To do this simply go to the google search engine and type in the following allintitle:your keyword. Do the same for the url search. allinurl:your keyword. The results will give you the real number of competitors you have for this keyword. Here are the results using our golf keywords.

mens left handed golf clubs allintitle: 144 competitors for 540 searches

ladies left handed golf clubs allintitle: 117,000 competitors for 1600 searches

left handed golf club set allintitle:502 competitors for 1900 searches


How To Find A Good Keyword Step 4: Target The Keyword in Your Content
To be competitive place the keyword as the first phrase in the content title. For example your article title could be. mens left handed golf clubs a review of the top manufacturers. Also place your keyword in the opening sentence of your article, if possible at the beginning of your content if possible.

Its easy to generate niche targeted content to dominate keyword phrases if you know what your doing. Remember however that finding the niche keyword to target is only one step in the process of getting ranked highly for your keyword. To score highly in the search engines your content must be highly relevant to the site. It must be popular in that several other sites point to your information as the authority on the keyword and thirdly your content must be unique in that it is not duplicated and available all over the internet. Get this formula right and you will see a flood of traffic coming to your site.
